SWEET POTATO

You’ve likely tasted sweet potato before. Surprisingly, this orange tuber is not related to the potato we know. It is a type of root, originally called sweet potato. At Discovered, we have not only the well-known orange sweet potato, but also the purple and white varieties in our range, providing you with plenty of choice!

ORIGIN

The sweet potato originally came from Mexico. Today, sweet potatoes are grown wherever the climate allows. Our orange-coloured variety comes mainly from the United States, but also from Spain, Italy, Senegal, Egypt and Honduras. We source the purple and white varieties only from the US and Honduras.

TASTE

Among the three sweet potato varieties, the white one takes the crown for sweetness, followed by the orange sweet potato, with the purple variety in third place. Both white and orange sweet potatoes tend to offer a slightly milder flavour and possess a slightly creamy texture. Purple sweet potatoes stand out not only for their striking colour but also for their subtle nutty and sweet taste. When consumed raw, sweet potatoes have a bold and refreshing flavour.

USE AND PREPARATION

The sweet potato is incredibly versatile. You can bake, boil, roast, grill and deep-fry sweet potatoes. And... you can even eat them raw! Sweet potatoes can be prepared in many ways. They go well with meat and fish and can be used in salads, fruit bowls, gratins, soups and cakes.

STORAGE ADVICE

Sweet potatoes should be stored in a cool and dry place. Avoid placing them in the fridge, as cold temperatures can alter their flavour and texture. Although sweet potatoes do not necessarily need to be stored in the dark, it is good to keep them away from sunlight. In fact, too much light can cause them to turn green.

EXOTIC TIPS!

Peel the sweet potato and/or cut into cubes or slices. Enjoy them raw with your choice of tasty dips.

Another serving tip: cut the unpeeled sweet potato into cubes and fry them with oil in the wok.

Sweet potatoes can be a star on the barbecue too!
